Moody was, at one time, in a southern city preaching about the value of the Word of God in a person's life. Suddenly he was interrupted by the loud voice of a man in the audience.          "Mr. Moody, I do not believe a single word in that collection of old wives' tales you call your Bible!"         "My dead man", replied Mr. Moody, "there is one verse in this Bible that your are forced to believe," Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap" ( Galatians 6:7 ) For example, he sows drunkards, and he will reap drunkards". The man sat down his whole family were drunkards.

Great Hymns Of The Faith          The stories of great hymns provide the inspiration behind many of the messages. Who is not blessed in hearing how God wonderfully lead one writer and another to pen the lines that have been sung throughout the years? "What A Friend' Joseph Scriven, 1819-1886          Joseph Scriven came to Canada in 1845 and lived here until his death at the age of sixty-six years. His consecration of his life to Christ was the result of a terrible grief which befell him in his earliest years. The young lady to whom he was engaged accidentally drowned on the eve of their wedding day.          Mr. Scriven wrote his famous hymn, "What a Friend", at at time of very special sorrow to bring comfort to his mother. It was never  intended that a eye but hers should see it. He told a neighbor, "The Lo

When A Man Cannot Be Pardoned

When A Man Cannot Be Pardoned God is gracious, but He will not force the acceptance of His grace upon men.          In 1829 George Wilson, in Pennsylvania, was sentenced to be hanged by a United States court for robbing the mails and for murder. President Andrew Jackson pardoned him, but his was refused, and Wilson insisted that it was not a pardon unless he accepted it. That was a point of law never before raised, and the President called the Supreme Court to decide. Chief Justice John Marshall gave the following decision; "A pardon is a paper, the value of which depends upon its acceptance by the person implicated. It is hardly to be supposed that one under sentence of death would refuse to accept a pardon, but if it is refused, it is no pardon. George Wilson must be hanged! And he was hanged. Professionally, the Gospel of Chris

The bulletin is dated 09/15/2024.  The Same Gospel For The Same Needs by Mrs. Jonathan Goforth          Some months after our arrival in China, an old experienced missionary came to my husband with the following advice: Do not attempt to speak of Jesus the first time on preaching to a heathen audience. The Chinese have a prejudice against the name of Jesus. Confirm your efforts to demolishing the false gods; and if you have a second opportunity you may bring in Jesus.          Later, when telling me of the advice that had been given him, my husband exclaimed with hot emphasis, "Never, Never, Never! The gospel which saved the down and out in the slums of Toronto is the same gospel that must save Chinese sinners."          Years later, more than one missionary came to my husband asking, "What is the secret of your power to get men out of such depths of sin

Hearing It Through

Hearing It Through          Years ago, a certain young man ran away from home and was not heard of for years. In some way, hearing that his father had just died, he returned home and was kindly received by his mother.          The day came fore the reading of the will; the family were all gathered together, and the lawyer began to read the document. To the surprise of all present, the will told in detail of the wayward career of the runaway son. The boy in anger arose, stomped out of the room, left the house, and was not heard from for three years. When eventually he was found he was informed that the will after telling of his waywardness, had gone to bequeath him $15,000 - quite a sum in those days, How much sorrow he would have saved himself and others, if only he had heard the reading through!         Thus many people only read half

Forgiveness

Forgiveness          "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace."         Ephesians  1:7          Forgiveness through redemption is based upon the blood - the finished work of Christ upon the cross.         In forgiveness, we have peace with God and peace of conscience. A forgiven person has immediate access to God. All redeemed and forgiven people are "kings and priest unto God" ( Revelation 1:6 ), and we need not the intercession of any man, for Christ Jesus is our eternal High Priest and we can "come boldly unto the throne of grace" ( Hebrews 4:12 ).         The forgiven believer has no fear of Hell because his sins are gone! ( Micah 7:19 ; Isaiah 38:17 ) The forgiven Christian looks forward to and expects Christ's coming and a home i

The Hymn Story Of The Solid Rock

Image
This is copied from the bulletin of Calvary Baptist Church on 472 Ocean Rd in Portsmouth NH 03801 . (603) 436-7736. The bulletin is dated 09/01/2024. The Hymn Story Of The Solid Rock         "For other foundation can no Man K-Lay that is laid, which is Jesus Christ" ( 1 Corinthians 3:11 )          My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness: I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name.                    Refrain:          On Christ the solid Rock, I stand, all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand.          Edward Mote knew nothing about God or the Bible as he grew up in London, England, the child of poor innkeepers. At the age of sixteen, he was genuinely converted to Christ. Mote later settled in a suburb of London where he became known as a successful cabinet maker and a devoted church layman.          Mote always found time to worship God. He was especially interested in Christian music,

Fundamentally Settled

Fundamentally Settled          In the days like these, when chaos appears to be king, and civilization itself sometimes seems verging on collapse, it is something mightily to be desired to have an anchor for the soul - something permanent, abiding, sure and steadfast, to be tied to.           A man with such an anchor, a U.S. Navy officer, wrote a letter to his pastor: "For almost thirteen years I have been a member, sometimes in better standing than at others. Many times my attendance has not bee as faithful as it might have been, but over those years, despite the fluctuating fervor which I applied to it. I can see that the church has been a real rock, a real reference point for me.          "It's just as in navigation - at the beginning of every voyage, you establish your bearing and distance from some fixed mark, and t
