A Motive For Personal Holiness

Image
This is copied from the bulletin of Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth NH . The bulletin is dated 01/28/2024.  A Motive For Personal Holiness.   Here are two very simple rules for living the Christian life:     Do no do anything that you would not be glad to have your Lord find you doing if He should come. I have found that one of the simplest rules to satisfy my heart about questions that have perplexed a great many people is to ask yourself "If the Lord should come at this moment, would you like him to find you doing that?". It is simply a wonderful how that clears things up.     One day a friend of mine was walking up Washington Avenue in Minneapolis thinking about the coming of the Lord. At the same time he was puffing away on a cigar. The thought suddenly came to him, "See here! How would you like the Lord to come and meet you here with this cigar in your mouth!" That was enough. He took the cigar out of his mouth and threw it into the gutter; and never li

Maranatha

This was copied from the bulletin of Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth NH . The bulletin is dated 01/14/2024. I believe it was written by the pastor; Donald Gum.  MARANATHA; THE LORD COMETH Maranatha is an untranslated Syriac word found in 1 Corinthians 16:22 . It means "The Lord Cometh". It was a word of greeting in the early church. When believers met, they said "Maranatha". It was a constant reminder of the fact of the Lord's return. The time has come to revive the use this word among believers. It should be our word of greeting when we meet and when we part.  The use of the word Maranatha is an expression of faith in the promise of our Lord regarding His return; and in all the more than three hundred references to the second coming of the Christ found in the New Testament. All the promises of God are yea and amen in Christ Jesus. He is looking for our faith and rejoices when He finds faith in our hearts. Let us dare to believe the promises of God regar

The Lord's Pressence

I found this in the church bulletin of Calvary Baptist Church of Portsmouth NH and found it inspiring. I copied it below. The Lord's Presence by Mrs. Jonathan Goforth May the Lord's presence for the new year be: Above You - To Guard "Know therefore this day and consider it in thine heart, that the Lord He is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath there is none else" ( Deut. 4:39 ). Underneath To Support "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms and He shall thrust out the enemy from before thee, and shall say say, destroy them" ( Deut. 33:27 ). Behind - As A Rear Guard "For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight, for the Lord will go before you and the God of Israel will be your reward." ( Isa. 52:12 ). Before - To Lead "I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight" ( Isa. 45:2 ) At Your Right Hand - To Protect "I have set the Lord always before me, because He is at

Walking with God in the New Year

Image
Here is something that was in the church bulletin that I found to be inspiring. The church bulletin was for 01/07/2024 and from Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth NH . Walking with God in the New Year He does not lead me year by year, nor even day by day, but step by step my path unfolds; "My Lord directs ye in it". Tomorrow's plan I do not know, I only know this minute; But He will say, "This is the way, by faith now walk ye in it". And I am glad that it is so; Today's enough to bear. And when tomorrow comes, His grace shall far exceed its care. What need to worry then, or fret! The God who gave His Son holds all my moments in His hand and gives them one by one.
