The Greatest Of These Is Love
In 1 Corinthians, chapter 13, facts about love are given in concentrated form.
"When that which is perfect is come, then that which was in part shall be done away." Love gives power to oratory, assurance to prophecy and ability to faith (vs 1-2). It triples the value of gifts. They then bless three: the needy, the given and me (vs 3). Even martyrdom is in vain without love.
"Charity suffereth long, and is kind" (vs 4). Our parents did, our teachers did, our preachers did, missionaries di still more, but most of all our Saviour did. He drank the full cup of human woe for us in Gethsemane (Luke 22:42) and by the grace of God, He tasted "death for every man" on Calvary.
Love has its unfailing contrast: "Rejoice not in iniquity; but rejoice in truth (vs 6)
Love also its positives. Love never fails anywhere at any time; uninspired prophecies do fail.
False knowledge vanishes away under the light of truth! (vs 7-8).
Paul said, "So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also, For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.." (Romans 1:15-16).
First Corinthians 13:10 says also, "..it is like the change from childhood to manhood (vs 11), and the difference between seeing "through the glass darkly". and being "face to face" (vs 12).
"And now abideth faith, hope, charity; these three, but the greatest of these is charity" (vs 13).
John the Beloved said: We love him because He first loved us". Then he added that we should show our love for God whom we have not seen in other members of the family, whom we do see (1 John 4:19-21). "For God so love the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). Some one have called that verse "The Little Bible.". It tells so much.
