Great Hymns Of The Faith

"I'll Go Where You Want Me To Go"
Charles H. Gabriel 1856-1932

"Can you sing me a verse of my favorite song, without the music?" queried John D. Rockefeller, Sr, of Homer Rodeheaver, as Mr. Rockefeller was ready to tee off at his Ormond, Florida golf course. "Yes", said Mr. Rodeheaver, and that song was "I'll go where you want me to go". This is not strange, for not only in the life of the multi-millionaire, but in numberless other lives have the gospel songs had a profound and far reaching effect.

Not enough has been written of the contribution made to Christian character by the music of the church, and far too little has been brought forward of the amazingly large influence of the gospel songs. Let me present a pencil sketch outline of three lives influenced by this one song - three lives, three leaders, three outstanding personalities definitely changed and vitally influenced by one song. Their lives have made large contributions to their day and generation. The tremendous impact upon their day for God and righteousness is a small sample of the work of the gospel song.

The first urge to become a gospel singer came to Homer Rodeheaver at the hearing of Mary Brown's song, "I'll go where you want me to go". He left the mountains of East Tennessee to attend Ohio Wesleyan at Delaware, Ohio in 1897, where he heard a singer named Ellis sing this song. Since that time he has reached the top rung of gospel songs and has sung the gospel message all over the world. Grace Moore, famous star of cinema, the network and grand opera, told a nation-wide audience  of the dee and abiding influence this song had in her life. Not only was her it her first solo in her little mountain church in Jellice, Tennessee, but it was also her favorite hymn. Charles M. Alexander, another son of the Tennessee mountains, was influenced profoundly by this song. Much of the vast influence he wielded as a song leader looks backward to the early effects of Mary Brown's song.

Mrs. Carrie E. Rounsefell, Boston, Massachusetts, wrote the music. In her evangelistic work she played the zither to accompany her singing. The words of the song, handed to her by a friend, suggested the tune she struck on her zither. This was later published and sent on its helpful mission to bless the world.

"Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them".
            (Matthew 7:20)

I'll Go Where You Want Me To Go
            Mary Brown            Carrie E. Rounsefell

"It may not be on the mountain's height, or o'er the stormy sea.
It may not be at the battle's front my Lord will have need of me.
But if by a still small voice He calls to paths I do not know I'll answer, dear Lord, with my hand in thine, I'll go where you want me to go
I'll go where you want me to go dear Lord, O'er mountain or plain or sea
