Great Hymns Of The Faith
"Does Jesus Care"
Frank E. Graeff, 1860-1919
The touch of God's sympathetic understanding and help gave us this intimate confession of Rev. Frank E. Graeff. His heart-warming experience of the Divine Presence as he went through deep waters was like the Psalmists from the deep and miry pit He lifted me. He had suffered the feeling of being abandoned as trial after trial tested his faith, and burden upon burden was laid upon his shoulders. In this extremity he turned his thoughts to Jesus Christ; and, whereas it had seemed as if he could bear it nor more, he now became conscious of a presence filling him with strength. He felt his burdens grow lighter, other shoulders took some of the load. This sense of sympathy and of burden sharing flooded his heart with joyous strength. It arrested that loss of spiritual power which seeps from the bleeding heart.
This personal touch became salve to his wounds. Soon his confidence was restored and new strength begotten. He won again his lost joy, and his life advanced to higher goals with wider horizons. This touch of God's helping hand in sympathetic understanding made him a richer personality, give him a keener understanding, and made a more helpful, sympathetic pastor and friend to all people.
He could scarcely help writing in trumpeting triumph, "I know my Saviour cares!"
While Mr. Graeff served some of the leading churches of the Philadelphia Methodist Conference, he was known as the "Sunshine Minister".
All those who suffer much can find deeper joy. Deep throated, joyous laughter wells up from the heart which has discovered not only blesses relief but adequate help for hitherto unbearable burdens. The ineffable joy of Jesus' touch pervades this song: "O yes, He cares, I know He cares!".
Mr. J. Lincoln Hall gave prayerful consideration to the theme of the poem and wrote the melody in beautiful touching strains.
"Castin all your care upon him: for he careth for you"
Does Jesus Care?
"Does Jesus care when my heart is pained too deeply for mirth and song,
As the burdens press, and the cares distress, and the way grows weary and long?
O yes, He cares; I know He cares, His heart is touched with my grief; when the days are weary, the long nights dreary, I know my Saviour cares He cares.
I think it is neat that one can look up scripture of the King James Authorized Bible online.
