What Has Science To Say?

What Has Science To Say?

Dr. Joseph A Parker said, "Some have found fault with me. They say I am old fashioned and out of date. I am always quoting the Bible. Why not turn to science this morning?

There is a poor widow here who has lost her only son, who was saved by the grace of God. She wants to know if she will see him again. Science will give the answer and I will put the Bible away." So he took the Book and put it on the seat behind. "Will this woman see her son again? Where is he? Does death end all? What has science to say?

Here a long pause. "We are waiting for an answer, the woman is anxious." Another long pause. "The woman's heart is breaking. Science must speak. Nothing to say? Surely? Then we must take the Book," and here he reverently replaced it, and with great deliberation opened it and read "... I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me" (2 Samuel 12:23); "... the dead in Christ shall rise first ... " (1 Thessalonians 4:6); "For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality, O death where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?" (1 Corinthians 15: 53, 55).

Then closing the Bible, and putting it affectionately, he said, "We will stick to the Book!"

"The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shall keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from generation for ever" (Psalm 12:6-7

We are not in earnest either in preaching or in hearing. If we were, could we be so cold, so prayerless, so inconsistent, so slothful, so worldly, so unkind men whose business is all about eternity?

We must be more in earnest if we would win souls. We must be more in earnest if we would walk in the footsteps of our beloved Lord, or if we could fulfill the vows that are upon us. We must be more in earnest if we would be less than hypocrites.

We must be more in earnest if we would finish our course with joy and obtain the crown at the Master's coming. We must work while it is day, "the night cometh, when no man can work" (John 9:4).

Apples of Gold

"Some day you will read in the papers that D. L . Moody is dead. Don't you believe it! At that moment I shall be more alive than I am now. I shall have gone up higher, that is all! I was born of the Spirit in 1856. That which is born of the flesh ma die, but that which is born of the Spirit will live forever".
                                            D. L. Moody

"The resurrection hangs a lantern in the valley of death."
                                            Hoffman

"Prayers are heard in Heaven very much in proportion to our faith, little faith will get very great mercies, but great faith still greater."
                                            C. H. Spurgeon

"It is the creed of every sound evangelical church that those who do go back to perdition were persons who never really believe in Jesus."
                                            A. A. Bonar
