The Candy Cane Gospel
The following was copied from the church bulletin from Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth NH. I think it is inspiring and insightful. Bulletin date December 10, 2023.
The Candy Cain Gospel
What do you think of when you see a candy cane? A Christmas decoration? A sweet treat? There's more to see.
Here are 5 ways candy canes can help us remember the real meaning of Christmas.
'J' is for Jesus. If you turn a candy cane in just the right way, you will see the letter 'J' which reminds us the Savior's name. Before Jesus was born, an angel deliver a special message from God: 'Call His name Jesus: For He shall save His people from their sins' (Matthew 1:21).
A Shepherds Staff: Now turn the candy cane around and it looks like a shepherd's staff = a curved stick used by shepherds to care for and protect their sheep. The shepherds were among the first people to see Jesus after He was born in Bethlehem (Luke 2:8-20). Jesus said people are like sheep, and the He is 'The Good Shepherd' who can rescue us from sins and death (John 10:11).
RED STRIPES: These stripes remind us that our Savior shed His blood and died for us on the cross. 'He was wounded for our transgressions. With His stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).
A Picture of Love: Why did Jesus do this for us? If you position two candy canes just the right way, you can see the reason. 'God so loved the world (John 3:16).
Sweet Forgiveness: A candy cane last longer than other sweet treats but the sweetness of knowing Jesus lasts forever!
The Candy Cane Gospel; The word 'gospel' means 'good news'. At Christmas we are reminded of the good news that God loves us. Even though we've sinned against Him. God sent His Son, Jesus, to search for us like a shepherd looking for lost sheep. He shed His blood and laid down His life to pay for our sins, then rose from the dead to prove He defeated sin and death.
Have you thank Jesus for what He has done and ask Him to forgive your sins? Put your trust completely in Him, not in you 'good deeds' or anything else. Through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ you will become a child of God, and He will care for you forever.
Jesus said "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me: and I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish (John 10:27-28).
