JOHN THREE SIXTEEN
(part two - continuation)
by Arthur Pierson
Now look at the next pair, "believeth" and "have". If God loved and gave, I need only to believe and have. In John chapter 1 we read: "But as many as receive Him, to them He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believeth on His name." (v12) Here the word "believe' is treated as in the sense equivalent to receive. In the forty-four occasions in which the word "believe" is used in John, you may put the word "receive" in the place of it, and it will make sense in every case.
Now the last of these pairs is "perish" and "life". Perish does not mean annihilation, it does not affect continuity of existence. The expression "die" or "death" is used in connection with the continuity of existence. 1 Timothy 5:6: "But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth." For to be carnally minded is death..." (Romans 8:6). You will find that "perish" is a term used of spiritual alienation and separation from God, it does not mean annihilation.
The whole truth of this grand text is thus as simple as it is wonderful. God loved and gave to all, and to each, His only begotten Son. Man has only to receive what God gave and have what he receive.
