The Greatest Of These Is Love         In 1 Corinthians , chapter 13 , facts about love are given in concentrated form.         "When that which is perfect is come, then that which was in part shall be done away." Love gives power to oratory, assurance to prophecy and ability to faith ( vs 1-2 ). It triples the value of gifts. They then bless three: the needy, the given and me ( vs 3 ). Even martyrdom is in vain without love.         "Charity suffereth long, and is kind" ( vs 4 ). Our parents did, our teachers did, our preachers did, missionaries di still more, but most of all our Saviour did. He drank the full cup of human woe for us in Gethsemane ( Luke 22:42 ) and by the grace of God, He tasted "death for every man" on Calvary.     ...

Great Hymns Of The Faith "Tell Me The Old Old Story" Katherine Hankey, 1834-1911          "I love to tell the story", and that other equally popular hymn by Miss Hankey "Tell me the old, old story", are both cantos taken from a long poem on the life of Christ, which was written in two parts. Miss Hankey, the daughter of a banker, was taken seriously ill in her home of England, and for a long time confined to her bed. At last the malady subsided, and she entered upon an extended period of convalescence through the months of 1866.          Grateful to her Lord and Master for her recovery and for the story of salvation "that satisfied my longings", as she expressed  it. She made the long days radiant with meditations on the life of Jesus: and out of these meditatio...

Great Hymns Of The Faith - Jesus, Saviour, Pilot Me

The bulletin is dated February 16th of 2025.  Great Hymns Of The Faith "Jesus, Saviour, Pilot Me" Edward Hopper, 1818-1888          Sometimes Christian hymns speak to the laboring man in the familiar terms of his daily work. Charles Wesley visited the collies at Newcastle-On-Tyne and, seeing the reflection of their furnace fires against the midnight sky, wrote for them the hymn, "See How Great A Flame Aspired". Likewise, on visiting the quarrymen at Portland he wrote for them the hymn containing these lines,                    "Strike the hammer of the Word,                    and break the hearts of stone."          It was a similar impulse that led Edward Hooper, while working among seafaring men, to...

Great Hymns Of The Faith The Battle Hymn Of The Republic          To have implicit trust in God's faithful care and protection is never easy in time of danger or strife. Yet even in the midst of the terrible civil ware between the northern and southern states, a remarkable woman named Julia Ward Howe proclaimed her confidence in God's triumphant power in this inspiring text.          Deeply anguished at the growing conflict between the two sections of the country, Mrs. Howe watched the two sections of the country, she watch the troop marching off to war singing "John Brown's Body", a song about a man who had been hanged in his efforts to free the slaves. Julia felt that the catchy camp meeting tune should have better words. In a desire to phrase her own feelings about the dr...

The Message Of The Cross Conquered

This is copied from the bulletin of Calvary Baptist Church on 472 Ocean Rd in Portsmouth NH 03801 (603) 436-7736. The bulletin is dated February 2nd, 2025. The Message Of The Cross Conquered          It is said that when the Moravians began their mission in Greenland, they found the people so untaught that they decided to begin by educating them. The results were so utterly disappointing that they decided to leave.           While waiting for a vessel, one of the missionaries began translating a portion of the Gospels, and thought he would test his translation by reading it aloud. After he read of the suffering and death of Jesus, there was a period of silence. Then the chief rose and asked the missionary to read it again. When he had finished, the chief said:          "What you read, is it true?"          "Yes"          "You say it is true? Then why...

The bulletin is dated February 2nd, 2025.    Great Hymns Of The Faith A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Martin Luther 1483-1546         This great war song of the Reformation, written by Martin Luther, has heartened many a German army going into battle, and has give courage to many a son of Germany amid the hardships of strange lands. It was a sung every day by Luther and his friends. Before the battle of Leipzig, September 17, 1631. The whole army of Gustavus Adolphus sang the hymn.          The story is still repeated by the Germans of Herkimer County, New York, of John Christian Bush, who settled there with his family of six children and founded the village of Shell's Bush on the afternoon of August 6, 1781, a band of Indians, led by Donald McDonald, a Scotch refugee, attacked the village. Bush, who was worki...
